How to prepare for a domain transfer

This guide helps you prepare a domain for transfer with the right checks in place before the move begins.

A domain transfer is usually straightforward when the registrar account is current and the domain is unlocked before the request begins. Most delays come from expired contacts, locked domains, or missing authorization codes.

BEFORE YOU START
  • Confirm the registrant email can still receive approval messages.
  • Make sure the domain is older than any recent transfer lock window.
  • Know where the domain will move and who will approve the transfer.
1

Unlock the domain

Most registrars keep transfer lock enabled by default. Remove that lock only when you are ready to move so the request window stays controlled.

2

Request the authorization code

The auth code or EPP code is usually required by the receiving registrar. Save it securely and confirm it matches the correct domain.

3

Watch for approval emails

Transfers often pause because the approval notice goes to an old inbox. Approve the request promptly so the transfer can finish without restarting.

If a website is already live on the domain, coordinate the transfer with DNS and hosting access so registrar changes do not create unnecessary confusion during launch work.

Domain transfer ready

Once the domain is unlocked, the auth code is available, and the approval inbox is confirmed, the transfer can start with fewer avoidable delays.
